The Maryland Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild expresses its sadness at all of the attacks on counter protesters standing up to the far right groups that were demonstrating in Charlottesville last Saturday. The Maryland Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild is especially outraged at the deadly car attack which critically injured many counter protesters and claimed the life of Heather Heyer, a compassionate and skilled legal worker.
We stand with those who confront racism and fight for immigrants’ rights, women’s rights, economic justice, environmental health, and peace. We take pride that the National Lawyers Guild mobilized dozens of legal observers, who bravely stood by the sides of those demonstrating against the far right in dangerous circumstances. We support efforts to remove Confederate monuments which glorify a racist past, and which have no place in a society where unity is what we strive for; and how we survive and prosper as a country.
The far right demonstration in Charlottesville happened in a context of emboldened white nationalism and fascism, which Donald Trump used to help him gain the presidency. We hope that the events in Charlottesville have awakened many people to the very real danger of the far right and to the need to struggle actively for justice in our communities, states, and country as a whole.
